Sept / Oct - Scapa Flow
Chris Evans is organising a trip for the club to dive the scuppered German WW1 fleet in
Scapa Flow in September 2013.
Based on MV-Valkyrie (www.mv-valkyrie.co.uk) a popular
'liveaboard' based in Stromness, on the flow, the week of September 29th 2013 has been provisionally booked. The water will be at it’s warmest and the
days still reasonably long. The boat moors up in Stromness each night so you sleep / eat on board, but can go ashore, visit the pub etc in the evening.
Diving - the sea bed in the flow is around 40m, and the battleships are
upside down (weight of the gun turrets turned them over as they sunk) so
to make the most of the diving you will need to be happy at these
depths (for 1 dive each day, the second will usually be a shallower,
more scenic dive on the blockships or similar. But we've 2 seasons to
get all dived up for this!!!
A quick bit of history - at the end of WW1 the German fleet was interned
in Scapa Flow, and was scuppered by orders of their admiral rather than
surrender to the British. Today 3 battleships, 4 cruisers and 1
destroyer remain to be explored by divers. Over the years a number of
other vessels have sunk in the flow, making this the largest collection
of wrecks in the northern hemisphere. It not all metal though, as the
tidal flow in and out of the sound means lots of squidgy stuff for those
of us with cameras.
